Irving, a large city with a population of 232,406 inhabitants, is located in Dallas County and is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. It is a city that attracts working professionals since a number of large corporations have their headquarters here. The corporations that employ the most people in Irving are Citigroup and Verizon. Other corporation headquarters include Exxon-Mobil, Kimberly Clark, and Fluor Corporation.

But the city also attracts those who are looking for a community environment. In 2012, in an article for D Magazine about Irving, one resident explained how the city had been focusing more on cleaning up, becoming sustainable, and redeveloping the Heritage District and the Texas Stadium Area. She also said, “I like that we’re getting a shiny, new highway through the center of town and that the city fought for DART development. But the best thing about Irving is that I can legally keep backyard chickens.” Clearly, Irving draws residents for a whole host of reasons.

The median age in Irving is 32 years old, younger than many other suburbs in the area. 9% of the population is between the ages 18 and 24, 20% of the population is between the ages of 25 and 34, and 28% of residents are between the ages 35 and 54. There are a large number of private and alternative schools, including the flagship school of Uplift Education Charter Schools. Irving also is home to four colleges or universities: University of Dallas, North Lake College, a campus of Dallas County Community College District, and a campus of DeVry University.
