Garland, with a population of 235,501, is the 12th largest city in Texas. This city is almost entirely located in Dallas County, making it very easy for residents to go to downtown Dallas via public transportation like the DART Blue line stations and buses. It is a city filled with venues and activities for the public. There are outdoor malls like Firewheel Town Center, sports arenas, and culture centers like the Granville Arts Center. In fact, Garland has an impressive list of sports stars that grew up in the area. There are also numerous historic sites and over 2,880 acres of parkland throughout the city.

The city is no stranger to accolades. In 2008, Garland was ranked number 67 on CNN and Money Magazine’s “Top 100 Places to Live” in the country. More recently, in 2014, Garland was ranked the 7th best city for saving money. Most jobs in Garland are a mix of blue and white-collar professions. The biggest employers are the Garland Independent School District, the City of Garland, and the Baylor Medical Center. Single residents make up 22% of the population, and the median age in Garland is 32 years old. While there are many homes and apartment complexes available, 74% of residents own their own home. Most homes owned in Garland are three-bedroom, single-family detached residences. But 20% of the houses are apartment complexes as well. The median household income in Garland is $52,785. Houses are typically listed on the market for $189K and the average closing price is $152K. There is a large population of children in Garland, as well as a robust system of schools from which to choose.

Most of the schools are in the Garland ISD, although some areas are in the Dallas ISD, Mesquite ISD and Richardson ISD. The middle and high schools have average-high ratings according to GreatSchools rating system, while many of the elementary schools are rated exemplary. Garland High School is the district’s international baccalaureate program. Two colleges, Amberton University and Richland College, are also located in Garland.

This large city is also very diverse when it comes to culture. 22% of adults hold a college degree. There is a large population of Vietnamese Americans in Garland. In 2010, Garland had one of the larger numbers of Vietnamese Americans in the country. 40% of the population reports its ethnicity to be Hispanic or Latino, and 47% report their race to be White.
